2018 IVCA Scholar Program begin Monday, June 11th

June 6, 2018

On June 11th, IVCA officially begins the 2018 IVCA Scholar Program.  This year we have 6 Scholars who will intern at various IVCA PE and VC member firms including 50 South Capital Advisors, GE Ventures, Growth Catalyst Partners, Origin Ventures, PPC Partners/Sheridan Place and Sandbox Industries.

The IVCA Scholar Program is intended to create an inclusive industry with more gender, racial and ethnic diversity by providing students exposure to a possible career in the venture capital/private equity industry.

The Scholar’s schedule begins with a 3 day on-boarding session intended to acclimate the Scholars to the language of investing in private companies and to help them grasp some of the key differences and similarities between venture capital and private equity investing.  Throughout the 10-week program the IVCA Scholars will participate in Toastmasters, visit various VC & PE related businesses and, of course, intern at IVCA member firms.

We look forward to working with this year’s Scholars as do our participating firms!

Scott Stern, Origin Ventures

"Origin Ventures is eager to participate in the IVCA’s Summer Scholars program for a second year in a row. 2017's summer intern, Leslie Jones-Dove, was an asset to the team, and we expect 2018's intern Erin Martinez will similarly have the opportunity to learn while adding value to both firm operations and portfolio company relations. Origin is proud to support the development of budding investors like Leslie and Erin and appreciates the IVCA’s efforts in managing and supporting the program."

Kevin Butts, 50 South Capital Advisors

“50 South Capital is incredibly excited to be hosting its first IVCA Scholar! We view the program as a fantastic recruiting and training resource for our firm.  The IVCA Scholar Program is perfectly aligned with 50 South Capital’s full-time analyst program as it attracts highly-talented young professionals and immerses them in private equity with numerous networking and educational sessions over course of a very productive summer.”

Connor Dawson, Growth Catalyst Partners

“The IVCA Scholar Program candidate pool was exceptional and we are excited to begin the summer. IVCA has conducted a well-run and efficient process for Growth Catalyst Partners and all participating firms.”

Pam Walton, Sandbox Industries

"Sandbox Industries is thrilled to welcome IVCA scholar, Christine Lee, to our team this summer. Christine was an excellent find among a superb group of candidates. We look forward to creating a dynamic learning environment for Christine as she supports the needs of the team.  We are proud to support the IVCA scholar program's mission to improve VC industry diversity."

We’ve followed up with a few of last year’s scholars.  Read on to see what they are doing!

Paveena Bhugra, 2017 Scholar at ParkerGale Capital:

What are you doing now?
This summer I will be working as an Investment Banking Summer Analyst.

How has/did the IVCA Scholar Program help you get where you are?
The IVCA program has helped me get to where I am in a multitude of ways. One being providing me with great mentors that I can go to for career advice and guidance. Allowing me the opportunity to intern in Private Equity and learn more about that industry, which also helped me gain more knowledge about careers in Investment Banking from a Private Equity perspective. Lastly, I gained some great friends from the program by being able to meet and spend time with all of the other IVCA Scholars.

Where do you hope to be in 5 years?
Five years from now I hope to still be pursuing a career in Investment Banking.

Zain Nomani, 2017 Scholar at Pritzker Group:

What are you doing now?
I am currently working at Deloitte within the Audit & Assurance practice. I started here in January of 2018 after graduating in December of 2017.

How has/did the IVCA Scholar Program help you get where you are?
The IVCA scholar program may not have gotten me where I am right now, as I was offered a full-time position at Deloitte before joining the program, however the scholar program provided an experience which allowed me to understand what I truly want to do long-term, which is pivoting into the Venture Capital industry in the future. It inspired me to work on my own startup, to continue and build connections in the Chicagoland area, and not box myself in for anything that I want to accomplish.

Where do you hope to be in 5 years?
I hope to be an entrepreneur in 5 years. The people that I had met during my summer scholar program inspired me to think outside of the box and provide creativity to the booming startup community in Chicago. I code in my free time and am working with my roommate to create an application in the near future.

Markayla Epps, 2017 Scholar at Sandbox Industries:

What are you doing now?
Since IVCA, I went back to school where I graduated in the fall of 2017. After graduation I decided to go into teaching where I help the children in special needs. Recently, I got job offer as an Executive Assistant at Balton Corporation.

How has/did the IVCA Scholar Program help you get where you are?
IVCA Scholar Program help me get to where I am because it taught me how to step outside of my comfort zone. Talking in front of a lot of people and networking has made it easier to enhance my skills of talking without being nervous.  Also, Sandbox Industries/ IVCA open the doors of learning about what Venture Capital because I knew nothing about it.

Where do you hope to be in 5 years?
In five years I plan to own my own Not-for profit organization where it allows children in need participate in extracurricular activities, expand my skills within Balton Corp so that I will be able to in charge or distribution projects on my own, and live my life to the fullest.

Edyta Krejner, 2017 Scholar at Jump Capital:

What are you doing now?
This summer I will be interning in NYC with Morgan Stanley in their IBD department with the M&A group.

How has/did the IVCA Scholar Program help you get where you are?
IVCA Scholar Program was essential for me in getting to where I am right now in my professional career. Learning more about PE and VC industries as well as working for Jump Capital gave me a great insight into the buy-side world. I have not only learned how to value a start-up but also what to look for in a potential investment from a qualitative standpoint. Through IVCA I have also had a chance to network with professionals that have been in the industry for years and participate in numerous events focused on strengthening my understanding of the industry.

Where do you hope to be in 5 years?
In five years, I see myself either going to business school in the USA or possibly moving back to Europe and continuing my professional career there.
