Corporate Profile:
Founded in 2004; Closed $5.7M Series A in February 2008Venture Investors (WI), Black Mountain Ventures (CA)
Nine full-time employees; actively hiring to expand R&D team

Technology: Nerites is developing synthetic, water-resistant tissue adhesives, sealants, and coatings for internal medical use. The current market is dominated by fibrin sealants ($1.6 Billion sales in 2007) which have inferior adhesive characteristics, are not compatible with wet tissue, and are often made with bovine components that can be dangerous. Synthetic medical glues ($500 Million sales in 2007) are also common, but these either suffer from weak adhesion or toxic byproducts. The Nerites technology is fully synthetic and biocompatible, and has extraordinary water-resistant adhesive strength. It is based on the natural adhesive proteins that marine mussels use to stick to rocks under sea water. Our breakthrough was recognized internationally with a cover article in the journal Nature (July, 2007) and was labeled “one of the top 100 scientific developments of 2007” by Discover Magazine.

Intellectual Property: Nerites controls the space with 21 patents and patent applications.

Applications: The Nerites technology can be used for numerous medical applications. As a Sealant, it can be used as an adjunct to sutures, staples, or cauterization to prevent leakage and infection following surgery. As an Adhesive, it can be used to replace sutures and surgical tacks, to close internal tears or incisions, and to affix synthetic or biologic “patches”. As a Coating, it can be used to prevent bacterial biofilm formation on medical devices, thereby reducing inflammation and infection.

Market Size: Current competitive products have sales exceeding $2 Billion. Due to its superior adhesive and safety characteristics, Nerites has the potential to dramatically expand this industry.

Strategy: Nerites will leverage corporate partners to sponsor development of well-defined applications in exchange for exclusive marketing rights in a limited field of use. Concomitantly, Nerites is developing several high-potential applications internally.
