IVCA Toolkit Series:  Outlook for Terms in Private Equity Investing

Kaye Scholer's annual "What's Market?" survey has been maintaining data on private equity deal terms since 2002. The panlists presented information from the "What's Market" survey, data from Robert W. Baird's investment banking practice and Wind Point Partner's extensive deal experience to to analyze how these trends intersect with the current dislocation in the credit markets and where deal terms will evolve as the M&A market recovers.

2008 Midwest Venture Summit

Attended by more than 400 VCs, angels, entrepreneurs and service providers, the 2008 MVS spanned 2 days and 2 venues.
 
Day one began with the University Business Plan Competition, where IL DCEO awarded its $50,000 grant to ReTel Technologies, University of Chicago GSB, one of 8 participating universities.  The afternoon session included 24 Early Stage companies whose presentations were viewed by more than 220 and judged for the 2008 Bob Geras Grant.
 
Day two included the awarding of the 2008 Bob Geras Grant to PatientImpact who was issued a check for $70,000 at the networking breakfast which began the day.  The morning continued with the presentations by the 18 Series A+ companies and followed by panel presentations hosted by Sonnenschein Nath and Rosenthal LLP and Reed Smith LLP.
 
The luncheon, hosted by KPMG, featured speaker John Gartner, author of The Hypomanic Edge.
 
The afternoon continued with a second round of presentations by each of the 18 Series A+ companies which were then followed by panels hosted by The Revere Group and Probitas Partners.

The IVCA hosted a luncheon for public pension funds to introduce the IVCA's mission of supporting the growth of the venture capital and private equity industry in Illinois and our shared fiduciary interests in an effort to forge a closer relationship with public funds.  A panel discussion of "Current Issues in Venture Capital & Private Equity Investing" was presented.  Topics covered were:  overall industry VC & Buyout Trends, current issues affecting VC and current issues affecting buyouts.
 
 
7th Annual CFO Summit for Finance Professionals of Venture Capital and Private Equity Firms

The IVCA presented the 7th Annual IVCA CFO Summit with presenting sponsor Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) on Oct. 18.
 
This annual event, which is offered for the benefit of venture capital and private equity firm CFOs and their staff, attracted almost 100 people in 2007. Bob Blee of SVB hosted a dinner the night before that was attended by out-of-state firms and some local CFOs.
 
The CFO Summit is designed to cover issues relevant for venture and buyout firms. The full-day event included presentations and panels covering:

  • Tax and accounting issues
  • Fund formation structuring issues and market terms update
  • Non-cash compensation
  • How to decide when it’s time to implement IT

    Financial Technology Investing - Chicago's Homegrown Successes

    On Sept. 13, the Illinois Venture Capital Association and the Illinois Information Technology Association collaborated to present “Financial Technology Investing: Chicago’s Home-Grown Successes”. The event was sponsored by William Blair & Co. and cohesiveIT.
     
    Following the presentation by Rob Metzger, William Blair & Co, founders and CEOs of leading and aspiring Chicago-area financial technology companies shared their insights and experiences with raising venture capital and private equity during a panel conversation. Featured panelists included:  Robert McCullen, AmbironTrustWave' Sam Mele, Firm58; Ajay Singhvi, Arroweye Solutions; and Tom Sosnoff, thinkorswim, Inc.  The panel was moderated by Devin Mathews of Baird Venture Partners.

    2007 Cubs Rooftop with Family & Friends

    Nearly 170 IVCA members, friends and family attended the annual Wrigley Field rooftop outing on June 15. In addition to an afternoon of networking and fun, the Cubs pulled off a convincing 4-1 victory over the San Diego Padres.  Food and refreshments were served and the facility offered inside viewing and air conditioning to combat the seasonably warm day. The IVCA thanks HSBC Bank NA for sponsoring the event.

The panel, which was moderated by Kirkland & Ellis partner Bruce Ettelson, showcased three different approaches to managing succession.     More than 30 early and seed stage companies presented business plans and equity offerings to regional venture capital investors.  Investor members of the Illinois Venture Capital Association, which organized the event, worked with presenting entrepreneurs and executives on developing tighter, more focused presentations. 
     
    The morning presentations were divided between 17 companies raising Series A or later financing rounds as well as 15 companies raising angel and seed financing rounds. Presentations lasted 10 minutes each with opportunities for questions and answers, with five-minute intervals between each presentation.

    6th Annual CFO Summit for Finance Professionals of Venture Capital and Private Equity Firms
     
    An annual event, this year's CFO Summit was sponsored by Kirkland & Ellis LLP, Silicon Valley Bank and Willis Mergers & Acquisitions Group.  The attendees earned 8 continuing education credits as they covered the subjects of portfolio valuation, accounting & tax issues, market valuations, state of the industry, insurance strategies and contact management & reporting.
