Sword Diagnostics has developed a revolutionary new detection system that dramatically improves the ability to detect low concentrations of biomarkers (indicators of disease). Identifying diseases earlier results in earlier treatment and better chances of survivability. Sword’s technology easily integrates into products currently on the market, providing an easy path to enhancing current and new tests. More sensitive diagnostics garner a 30% - 100% premium, providing significant motivation for companies providing diagnostics for researchers and for clinical applications to incorporate our technology.
Swords patent-pending technology utilizes Raman spectroscopy and new proprietary chemistry to provide these significant enhancements in sensitivity. Raman is an established and proven detection technology used extensively in a number of markets today. The chemistry is a new detection substrate that replaces the substrate in existing assays. It is activated by the enzyme horseradish peroxidase (HRP), which is very commonly used, so new reagents and antibodies will not need to be created to utilize the technology. The company is also working with partners to develop a low cost automated reader for this application. The first generation reader was launched in February, 2008, and a 96-well plate reader version will be available in summer, 2008. The company is comprised of experienced entrepreneurs, top scientists with over 20 years experience each at Abbott Labs (where they developed some of the top diagnostic systems in the world), and marketing and sales from Amersham and Pierce. They have already completed a developer’s kit that can be used to improve diagnostic sensitivity by over 100 times, which enables scientists to improve both new and existing diagnostics. The developer’s kit was launched in February, 2008. The company is now actively collaborating with a number of partners with significant revenues to incorporate our technology into their products through Sword’s sales and licensing activities. The company has already successfully converted several commercially available assays to its Raman detection system. The company is using a proven business model in the biological detection market segment. Short-term revenues will be generated by partnerships with established corporations in the research market, while larger revenues will come from clinical diagnostic providers.
