IVCA Welcomes Newest Members to Board of Directors

IVCA thanks Bret Maxwell, MK Capital and Dave Cooney, Beecken Petty O'Keefe & Company for their past service to the IVCA Board of Directors.  Bret who began his service in 2001 and Dave who began his service in 2002 have resigned from the Board effective July 1st. Their time and dedication to the IVCA is greatly appreciated by all members and especially we the staff!

IVCA is pleased to welcome the newest members to the IVCA Board of Directors:

Karen Buckner, MK Capital - Karen replaces board member Bret Maxwell who has served on Board since 2001.

Karen is a Partner and Chief Operating Officer at MK Capital. Karen leads the firm's education technology investment practice. Karen has initiated and managed several venture investments for the Productivity Fund III and the Productivity Fund IV and served as a public equity research analyst in emerging markets at First Analysis Corporation. Her areas of expertise include operational management and business and financial analysis. Prior to founding MK Capital, Karen served as Vice President of Operations at I-Works, a venture-backed internet services company, where she was responsible for building the organization and its related infrastructure. Karen currently sits on the board of directors of Apex Learning and eSpark Learning. Karen is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Kellogg's Graduate School of Management.

Justin Ishbia, Shore Capital Partners - Justin is a founding partner of Shore Capital, a healthcare private equity firm focused on partnering with companies that have between $1-5 million of EBITDA.  Justin is responsible for investment sourcing and valuation, transaction structuring, the securing of acquisition financing, fundraising and all administrative activities. Justin is the Chairman of seven Shore Capital portfolio companies, Sirona Infusion, Access I.V., HomeCare I.V., ClearPath Diagnostics, Excel Rehabilitation Services, Michigan Rehabilitation Specialists and Fast Pace Urgent Care.

Prior to being a founding partner of Shore, Justin worked as an investment professional at Valor Equity Partners, a Chicago-based private equity firm.  At Valor, Justin worked on investments across a variety of industries; however, he spent the majority of his time on healthcare investments.  Prior to joining Valor, Justin was an attorney in the private equity group of Kirkland & Ellis.  At Kirkland, Justin was involved in more than 25 private equity transactions, including leveraged buyouts of private and public companies, recapitalizations, divestitures, debt financings, venture capital investments, executive compensation, and private equity fund formations. 

Outside of the office, Justin is a member of the Young Presidents' Organization (YPO), Vanderbilt University Law School Advisory Board, and Rush University Medical Center Associates Board.  Additionally, Justin has been a guest lecturer at Loyola University of Chicago Law School and the Thunderbird School of Global Management.

Justin received his Juris Doctorate from Vanderbilt University Law School.  Justin earned a Certificate of Law and Business from the Vanderbilt Owen Graduate School of Management and a B.A. in Accounting from Michigan State University.  Justin is a member of the State Bar of Illinois and a Certified Public Accountant.

Troy Phillips, Beecken Petty O'Keefe & Company - Troy replaces board member Dave Cooney who has served on the Board since 2002.

Troy is a Principal at Beecken Petty O'Keefe & Company.  Prior to joining Beecken Petty O’Keefe & Company in 2007, Troy was a Vice President with Edgewater Growth Capital Partners where he was responsible for executing private equity transactions and leading due diligence activities. Previously, Troy worked with Triple Tree Capital and served as an Associate with Frontenac Company. Troy began his career in New York as an Analyst in BT Alex Brown's investment banking division.

Troy serves on the Board of Directors of Corizon, Genoa Healthcare, Maxor, Preferred Homecare, and RSA Medical, LLC.

Troy received a Bachelors degree, summa cum laude, in finance and computer applications from the University of Notre Dame and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. Troy has earned the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.

Jennifer Steans, Financial Investments Corporation - Jennifer W. Steans is the President of Financial Investments Corporation (FIC), where she oversees private equity investments and the Steans family office operations. Prior to founding FIC in 1994, Ms. Steans served as Treasurer of Prime Graphics, Inc. and as a Senior Consultant then a Manager for the Management Consulting arm of Deloitte & Touche, primarily in the finance and health care industries. In addition, Ms. Steans was a high school math teacher for two years out of college.

Ms. Steans holds a B.S. degree in mathematics from Davidson College and a M.M. from the J. L. Kellogg Graduate School of Business at Northwestern University. While attending Kellogg, Ms. Steans received the Dean's Distinguished Service Award and a $5,000 Entrepreneurship Award. She was a fellow in the 1996-1997 class of Leadership Greater Chicago.
