May 9, 2007

CHICAGO - “ Three undergraduate minority students who are enrolled at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign College of Business have been selected for the IVCA's first class of scholars. The 2007 IVCA scholars are:

  • Lesley Winbush from Chicago, an accounting major, will be entering her junior year at UIUC in the fall. She will intern at ARCH Venture Partners.

  • Ashton Clark from Flossmoor, a general business student, will be entering his sophomore year at UIUC in the fall. He will intern at Baird Venture Partners and Baird Capital Partners.

  • Peter Alonso from Chicago, an accounting major, will graduate this weekend and will enter the UIUC master's in accounting program in the fall. He will intern with Thoma Cressey Bravo.

Representing the private equity community in Illinois, the IVCA established its scholar program in 2007 to interest talented minority students in a career in the venture capital and private equity industry.

The program is awarding scholarships valued at $15,000 per student with $5,000 toward general tuition fees and the option of accepting a 10-week summer internship at a Chicago-area venture capital or private equity firm. This includes $10,000 in compensation.

IVCA scholar applications were screened by dean John Hedeman at the UIUC College of Business. Final applicants were interviewed by the hiring firms and the IVCA's scholar committee. This committee includes:

  • Merrick Axel, Thoma Cressey Bravo
  • Ellen Carnahan, Seyen Capital
  • Keith Crandell, ARCH Venture Partners
  • Dan Howell, Mesirow Financial
  • Dan O'Connell, Golder Center at UIUC

The IVCA scholars will participate in IVCA events through the fall. Feel free to introduce yourself!
