IVCA Scholars Begin Their Internships

IVCA Scholars Begin Their Internships

June 17, 2008

CHICAGO - “ With the objective of increasing minority participation in venture capital and private equity, the second group of IVCA Scholars began their summer internships on June 2, 2008. Dan O'Connell welcomed the scholars and conducted a half-day introduction to venture capital and private equity at the University of Illinois' Golder Center.

He will be available throughout the summer to coach and provide technical support to the students as needed. This year's scholars include:

  • Jason Aguiar at ARCH Venture Partners
  • Roy Beckham at Beecken Petty O'Keefe & Co.
  • Azure Nelson at Baird Private Equity
  • Mike Webb at Thoma Cressey Bravo, Inc.

In addition to the work the students do at their firms, students will participate in a weekly Toastmasters meeting. Toastmasters is a program dedicated to helping people become more competent and comfortable in front of an audience. During the summer, IVCA member firms will provide opportunities for the students to learn about various aspects of venture capital and private equity with visits to member firms.

During each visit, students will be introduced to the firm's role in the industry and to the careers available within the firm. The firm will discuss the types of skills, experience and education required for each career.

Our first visit was to Adams Street Partners on June 10, 2008. Adams Streets was incredibly generous with its time and provided a thorough look at their business, insights into the career tracks and attributes of people in these careers and tips for success. Participants from Adams Street included:

  • Tom Berman
  • Bon French
  • Miguel Gonzalez
  • Bill Hupp
  • Joan Newman
  • Kathy Wanner

The scholars are also included in all scheduled IVCA events and activities. They attended a fund-raising luncheon on June 9, 2008 for Illinois State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias at Harry Caray's restaurant. The IVCA-PAC purchased a table at the event.

We were joined by IVCA Vice Chair Ellen Carnahan along with IVCA members Heidi Levin and Tom Churchwell. We are looking forward to a great summer with the scholars. If you see one of them at an event, please make them feel welcome!
