Profile: New IVCA Board of Director Member, Alex Meyer of Origin Ventures

August 5, 2020

Last year the Illinois Venture Capital Association (IVCA) announced their latest Board of Directors, who will serve from January 1st, 2020, to June 30th, 2021. There are many new faces and perspectives on the Board, so the IVCA is continuing a series of profiles for those recently minted BOD members. The next profile is below …

New IVCA Board of Director Member: Alex Meyer, Managing Partner
Representative Firm: Origin Ventures

IVCA: Tell us a little about your firm and your tenure there.

Alex Meyer: Origin Ventures is an early stage venture capital firm that collaborates with ambitious founders to build high-growth, innovative, and category-defining technology companies. The firm was founded in 1999 and is based in Chicago and Salt Lake City. Investments include companies like Grubhub, Cameo, Backlot Cars, Tovala, Tock, 15Five, Fountain, and many others. I joined the firm in 2019.
IVCA: What made you decide to Join IVCA’s board?

Meyer: Origin has been a long-standing supporter of the IVCA as a contributor and with members sitting on the board. I am continuing that legacy on behalf of our firm and here to do what I can to support the organization that serves to speak for and represent our industry.

IVCA: The coming months will be difficult as we figure out how to move through the pandemic and expected recession, any thoughts on how VC/PE will fare?

Meyer: I think we find ourselves in a period of time when the shelf life of many thoughts on the future are pretty low, given the rapid pace of change. That said, while there will inevitably be continued challenges in the coming months, and I remain very optimistic about the future.

We have already seen incredible examples of highly talented entrepreneurs meeting the challenges head on that we’re all faced with today, and in some cases turning these headwinds into tailwinds through their creativity and determination. In periods of turmoil and disruption, great leaders emerge for what they are … and with them the companies that they are building. As in past downturns, we will see great businesses born out of these challenging times, and we will see the players in our industry supporting them along the way.

IVCA: The IVCA works to share ‘best in class’ operational practices across firms, any thoughts on how that might help firms weather our current storms?

Meyer: We have firms within this organization that have weathered not one, but several major storms over the years. And while each has its own nuances, there is a great deal to be learned from investing – applicable across the industry – through such times. Tapping into that institutional knowledge is something that IVCA is uniquely positioned to do.

IVCA: What are you hoping to offer and gain from IVCA Board Participation?

Meyer: I hope to continue our firm's tradition of supporting this organization and its leaders in its worthy mission, and thereby enable the industry to continue fueling economic growth in our state, region and beyond.
