How did we get here...how do we get out?!
Even before COVID, Illinois’ ballooning pension obligations have crowded out spending on virtually every other category of spending in the state. Illinois is now in a more severe crisis and all of us will be affected by the looming disaster.
All is not lost!
Three individuals from our business community have been working tirelessly to understand the complexity of the problems and consider possible approaches to resolving the crisis will discuss what they’ve learned about the scope of the problem AND some potential solutions.
  • Ira Weiss, Hyde Park Venture Partners
  • Marin Gjaja, BCG
  • Laurence Msall, The Civic Federation
In a discussion moderated by Ira Weiss, Marin Gjaja & Laurence Msall who have studied the problem extensively, will share their insights with us.
Marin Gjaja is the Chair of BCG's Center for Illinois' Future which focuses on local social impact and civic work supporting education, economic development, youth violence reduction, and struggling neighborhoods.  Marin is also co-chair of Advance Illinois an organization that is committed to an aligned education system that strives for equity, stresses college and career readiness and completion, and supports the whole child from the earliest years through adulthood.        It was while working to understand education funding in Illinois that Marin immersed himself in the issues of Illinois’ pension debt which “crowds out” education funding.
Laurence Msall is President of the Civic Federation, a nonpartisan government research organization established in 1894 that promotes independent and evidence-based efforts to improve the effectiveness, financial sustainability and transparency of State and local governments in Illinois. Before joining the Federation in 2002, Msall was Senior Advisor for Economic Development and Infrastructure for Governor George H. Ryan from 1998 to 2002.  Ira Weiss is a partner at Hyde Park Venture Partners and a professor at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, where he teaches entrepreneurship and tax strategy. Ira’s primary investing interests are technology-enabled consumer and business services and healthcare IT.
